We know trolls pretty much needed to sleep during the day, since either they were especially sensetive or their sun was especially hot. But we have no way of knowing how long an Alternian day even went for, or how long a troll could go for without sleeping
Considering their social-insect like culture and society, it's possible they just might not need to sleep? Which would further explain why they need a calming solution when they do actually sleep.
